Free and Low-Cost AI Training for North Carolina Small Businesses

The biggest barrier to AI in most small businesses isn’t the software. It’s that nobody has had time to learn it properly. The good news for North Carolina owners is that a lot of AI training for small business teams is free or close to it, from community college seminars to state grants that reimburse training costs. The large AI companies also now offer free courses aimed at small businesses.

Here’s where to find it, what each option is good for, and how to turn it into a simple plan for your team. Programs and offers change often, so confirm the current details before you sign up.

Free AI workshops at community college Small Business Centers

North Carolina’s community colleges run Small Business Centers that offer free seminars, webinars and no-cost one-on-one counseling. AI has become a regular topic. A few recent examples from Western North Carolina:

These sessions fill up, so check the statewide calendar at ncsbc.net and your local center’s page every month or two. A-B Tech’s Small Business Center page lists its no-cost services.

One-on-one help from the SBTDC and SCORE

Seminars teach the basics. A counselor can help with your specific decision, like whether an AI tool is worth the cost.

  • The NC Small Business and Technology Development Center offers no-fee, confidential business counseling across the state. It’s a good place to test the numbers before you invest.
  • SCORE volunteers offer free mentoring, and SCORE chapters run AI webinars, like this 2026 session in the SBA’s free National Small Business Week Learning Lab.

State grants for small business AI training

If you’re paying for training, the state may cover part of it.

  • Incumbent Workforce Development Program. A competitive state grant for training your existing employees. According to Buncombe County’s NCWorks page, it provides up to a $40,000 lifetime maximum per business. You apply through your local workforce development board. In Buncombe, Henderson, Madison and Transylvania counties, that’s the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board at Land of Sky Regional Council.
  • On-the-job training. The same page lists up to 75% wage reimbursement for training eligible individuals.
  • Customized training through the community colleges. For eligible companies that are creating jobs, investing in new equipment or upskilling workers, the community college system can provide training at no or reduced cost. Ask your local community college’s business services office whether you qualify.

Grant rules and funding change from year to year. Call your workforce board before you plan around one.

Free AI courses you can take online

These are self-paced, and each one is free or has a free option for small businesses. All are built for working professionals rather than programmers:

  • Anthropic’s AI Fluency for Small Businesses. A free course developed with PayPal and small business owners. It covers how AI works, its limits, and how to apply it to customer interactions, back-office work and leadership, with a certificate at the end.
  • Google AI Professional Certificate. Google made this certificate free for eligible U.S. small businesses with 500 or fewer employees. You apply with your business’s EIN. Without that, it’s part of a Coursera subscription at $49 a month.
  • OpenAI Academy. OpenAI’s learning site has courses, livestreams and a small business community, including sessions on ChatGPT for small businesses.

A good free AI course teaches habits, not just buttons: how to give clear instructions, how to check the output, and what not to share. Those habits carry over to whichever tool you use.

Low-cost options for deeper skills

If someone on your team will own AI for the business, they may need more than a short course. A-B Tech offers an Artificial Intelligence certificate and associate degree through its information technology program. Paid certificates on Coursera and similar platforms are another route. For most small businesses, though, the free options above plus practice on real work go further than a long program.

How to plan AI training for a small business team

Training sticks when it’s tied to real work. A simple approach:

  1. Set the rules first. A one-page AI use policy tells people which tools are approved and what data stays out.
  2. Pick one free course for everyone, like AI Fluency for Small Businesses, and give people an hour of work time to take it.
  3. Hold a 30-minute session per role using your own documents and tasks.
  4. Name one or two champions who go deeper and help others.
  5. Check in after 30 days on what people actually use, and adjust.

Our AI rollout plan covers this in more detail, and our 30-day plan to start using AI helps pick the first tasks.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free AI training for small businesses in North Carolina?

Yes. Community college Small Business Centers offer free AI seminars and webinars, the SBTDC offers no-fee counseling, and several AI companies offer free online courses for small businesses.

Can a state grant pay for AI training?

Possibly. The Incumbent Workforce Development Program reimburses training for existing employees, and community college customized training can be free for eligible companies. Ask your local workforce development board or community college about current rules.

Which free AI course should my team start with?

Pick one aimed at everyday work, not programming. Anthropic’s AI Fluency for Small Businesses and Google’s AI Professional Certificate are both designed for small business staff.

How long does it take to train a team on AI?

The basics take a few hours per person. Real comfort comes from a few weeks of using AI on actual tasks with someone to ask when it goes wrong.
